Future of Telecom Beyond 5G Systems – Ian Akyildiz (Georgia Tech, USA)

While the research community is working towards realizing the 5G wireless systems, some ideas are getting developed in the world. In this talk, a vision for future of telecom is presented. The communication will be mostly based on simple voice driven applications. There will be nano-scale nano-phones, nanocameras and many non-intrusive nano-devices which will create a totally new communication paradigm. This new paradigm will be called Internet of NanoThings. Furthermore, there will be nano-bio-sensors implanted inside the human body which can collect information from inside the body and if necessary attack any diseases or tumors. This paradigm is called Internet of BioNanoThings where molecular communication paradigm is utilized where the physicians can remotely sense and treat the human body. Furthermore, the 5G systems will be expanded through CubeSats which are special satellites supporting the 5GBeyond infrastructure. All of these new paradigms will operate dynamically throughout low (GHz) to very high (THz) frequencies using newly designed reconfigurable frontends. This talk will point out many open research directions.

New perspectives on interoperability and communication primitives in 5G Internet of Things networks – Antonio Iera (University of Reggio Calabria, Italy)

The talk will address the main issues emerging in 5G IoT scenarios, related to both interoperability among multiple heterogeneous IoT network domains and the need for supporting efficient communications among connected devices belonging to these domains. Key players’ requirements and needs will be highlighted and the audience will be made aware of differences between current proliferating solutions for interoperability and group communications, mainly addressed at an application or middleware layer (with associated drawbacks), and a more effective global interoperability solution provided at the control plane of the network layer and suitably designed for future networking scenarios. Further objective of the talk is the description of the main design and implementation issues and the functional elements of a framework supporting a new network primitive for group data casting, Sociocast, originated by the convergence of two pillars of 5G networks: the paradigm of “social networks of devices” and the virtualization of both network functions and physical IoT devices. Its feasibility when coupling the novel network control plane functionality with data planes of existing networks, is discussed with a keen attention to 5G solutions making use of Software Defined Networking.
